Change is a certainty in our world. Sometimes it can be painful and sometimes it brings joy. If there is anything that never changes, we would want to grab hold of it, to understand it and build upon it.
Unchangeable or immutable things do not exist in this world. Rocks erode, land forms shift, the ocean continually changes. People grow and change through the very process of experiencing life and aging. Cultures change over time with various influences. But, there is an unchangeable One.
God does not change. The characteristic of God, called immutability should have a profound impact upon us and our thinking! I hope to show you why this fact about our God is so vital to our well-being and to our understanding about life itself.
Because God does not change, we can know His promises are still in force. We know He will deal with us according to what He has said, for His word does not change either. His love is enduring and never failing. We can rest in His love and know He is in control of those very things that are out of our control.
The words always and never only apply to our God. Since God does not change, He still hates sin, yet continues to offer forgiveness and restoration to sinners. He always continues to love people and desires that none be lost and all come to repentance. He offers many chances to people to come to Him through His Son, Jesus. Trusting an unchangeable God makes sense. Trusting ourselves, our feelings, our limited perspective of things or others' finite and changeable views and philosophies just does not make any sense.
Perhaps even Christians may get the idea that God changed somewhere between the Old and New Testaments. Surely you have heard people say, "That was the God of the Old Testament and this is the God of the New Covenant." Perhaps they have never read the entire Bible for themselves and seen with their own eyes the events of history as it displays the unchangeable nature of God. Reading about the unfolding plan of salvation from Genesis 3 through Revelation 22 reveals the unchangeable purpose of our immutable God.
God's love, plans, promises, judgements and words remain unchanged, and I rejoice. I stake my life on what He has said and the truth He has revealed through His Son, Jesus. You can too! Doma

The Garment Mender
I gave the garment of my life to You today, Lord,
I surrendered it as fully as I could.
"You alone can mend it, Jesus, please do it now", I prayed,
And then I took it back again.
I looked at the tattered edges,
The patience worn too thin,
And with my dull old needle,
I began to sew again.
I tried to use a brand new patch,
But knew it wouldn't do.
Somehow the old life didn't match,
I needed something new.
At last with great reluctance,
I surrendered it once more.
"Oh mend my life, dear Jesus",
I prayed just as before.
Then from the heights of heaven,
A voice came loud and clear,
"I'd gladly mend your garment,
if you'd only leave it here!" Doma
